Problem words

Seringkali kali kita merasa kebingungan dan tidak tahu mana kata yang tepat untuk digunakan dalam membentuk kalimat sementara kata tersebut memiliki arti yang mirip.

Here's a list of number of troublesome words. So, let's learn how to use them correctly! :)

Accept, receive (verbs)
  • I will accept your offer (say yes to)
  • I didn't receive your letter. (get)
Advice ; advise
  • Let me give you some advise. (noun)
  • The doctor advise me to stay in bed. (verb)
Affect, effect
  • The unpleasant experience affected his decisions. (influence verb)
  • The effect of the storm was terrible. (result-noun)
Alike ; like
  • The twins look alike. (similar-adverb)
  • The soup tastes like liquid soap. (similar to-preposition)
Amount ; number
  • This computer has got a large amount of memory. (used with uncountable nouns)
  • There's a large number of files on the hard disk. (used with countable nouns)
As, like
  • He came on time, as he promised. (conjunction)
  • This drink tastes like coffee. (preposition)
Beside, besides
  • I want to sit beside my sweetheart. (next to preposition of place)
  • Besides Elijah Wood, she adores Topher Grace. (in addition to preposition indicating addition).
  • That cellphone is way too expensive; besides , its too big. (also, in addition-adverb)
Between, among (prepositions)
  • What's the difference between a PDA and a GPS? (involving two items or persons)
  • Please divide the cake among the five children (involving three or more)
Bring, take, carry (verbs)
  • Bring that cam recorder here, please. (towards the speaker)
  • Take this cam recorder to the other end of the room, please. (away from the speaker).
  • She's carrying a cam recorder (any direction)
Continual, continuous (adjectives)
  • At the office, she would  continually listen to her iPod. (over a period of time with break-adverb)
  • she hass been listening continuously to her iPod for hours. (without any breaks-adverb)
Desert, dessert (nouns)
  • The Sahara is the world's largest desert. (dry, intertile land)
  • Let's have ice cream for dessert . (fruit, pudding etc. served as the last part of meal)
Discover, invent (verbs)
  • Gold was discovered in that area. (find something that already existed but its existence was unknown before)
  • Who invented the microwave oven ? (make a new thing)
Hear, listen (verbs)
  • I can hear the traffic. (without making any effort)
  • I tried to listen to what she was saying. (making an effort)
Loose, lose 
  • Keep the kite string loose, not tight. (adjective)
  • It's important not to lose the house keys, or you can't enter the house. (verb)
Made of, made from 
  • This chair is made of wood; that one is made of steel. (material can still be seen)
  • These cookies are made from flour, milk, sugar, and butter. (material can no longer be seen)
Principle, principal
  • He's a man  of modern principles. (rule of conduct, basic law-noun)
  • Isn't the goalkeeper the principal player in football? (the most important adjective)
  • The school principal ants to have a meeting of all the teachers. (headmaster-noun)
Quiet, quite
  • Don't make a noise, be quiet. (adjective)
  • She's quite pretty. (meaning very but less strong-adverb)
Raise, rise (verbs)
    • Raise your hand if you have a question. (verb followed by object)
    • The sun rises in the east. (verb without object)
    Respectable, respectful (adjectives)
    • My grandmother is a respectable lady. (deserving respect and honor)
    • We must be respectful towards our parents. (showing respect.)
    Than, then
    • He's bigger than his brother. (used in comparisons-conjunction)
    • Help me with my homework first, then I'll go out with you. (time conjunction)


            Jadi, perlu diperhatikan apabila kita hendak membuat kalimat, dan kita hendaknya mengetahui fungsi dan makna dari kata-kata tersebut, dan jangan jika kita ingin membuat kalimat, jangan gunakan pola bahasa Indonesia terlebih dahulu dan kemudian di terjemahkan ke dalam bahasa Inggris, karena bahasa Inggris tidak sama dengan bahasa Indonesia . 
          Memang kata - kata diatas memiliki arti yang mirip atau ada beberapa pronounciation yang sama, so, jika kamu ga mau lagi salah menyebut atau ditertawakan, pay more attention about those words guys! :)
